We want to hear what you think
1. We heard from the community that capturing the vibrancy and excitement that was the essence of Honest Ed’s in its heyday should be one of our goals. We envision that place to be a Mirvish Village Public Market. What do you think?
2. You told us that eclectic, fine-grained retail is an integral part of this community and we have incorporated this idea in our retail concept – realized in small retail frontages and in Honest Ed’s alley. Do you think this will successfully complement the neighbourhood and existing retail? Are there specific shops or services you think would make a good addition here?
3. We are considering complementing the Mirvish Village Public Market with a full-service pharmacy to meet local shopping needs. Do you think this combination will satisfy the daily shopping needs of current and future residents? Should we consider including a grocery store as well?
4. We heard early on about the special character and history of Markham Street. Our goal was to make Markham the heart of the project by creating a rich pedestrian-oriented space that can accommodate a weekend market, restaurant patios, festivals, and more. Do you think Markham should be semipedestrian or a high street? What days/months/times should Markham be closed to car traffic? What kinds of activities do you envision taking place on Markham?
5. We heard that housing that corresponds to the neighbourhood should be a priority. We are looking at rental housing and a variety of housing types for Mirvish Village. Do you think our housing mix responds to the needs of the community and, on a larger scale, the City?
6. Residents with young families told us that it’s not easy finding appropriate housing or childcare in this neighbourhood. We have incorporated large three and four bedroom units and a daycare as part of our initial plans. Do you think this will encourage families to move to, or stay in, the neighbourhood? Are there other neighbourhood amenities required to sustain families?
7. Using alternative modes of transportation has been on the rise throughout downtown Toronto. We want Mirvish Village to contribute to this trend and are incorporating infrastructure for bike and car share, bike storage, end-of-trip facilities, bike repair shop, and electric vehicle charging stations. What else would you like to see to encourage alternative forms of transportation?
8. Sustainability and resilience are important to the City of Toronto and to this community. Our goal for Mirvish Village is to be the first LEED Platinum neighbourhood in Canada. What are your thoughts on our plans for sustainability? Do you think there are other ways we could make Mirvish Village more sustainable?
9. Mirvish Village has a longstanding connection to the arts and residents have expressed the importance of celebrating this part of the area’s history. We believe that keeping the eclectic atmosphere of the neighbourhood and complementing it is vital to the success of Mirvish Village. Our initial plans are to celebrate the unique character of Mirvish Village through a public art program focused around world renowned graffiti artists. What other kinds of public art would you like to see?
10. Signage both in the store and outside was a big part of the fun of Honest Ed’s. Our current concept includes signage that pays homage to Honest Ed’s character. Do you think this is an important aspect to capture as part of the design? Would you rather see more traditional signage as part of the retail concept?
11. Early on we heard from you that honouring the history and essence of Mirvish Village and Honest Ed’s would be an important part of our concept. We wanted to create a place that reinvigorates Mirvish Village, and celebrates the spirit of this place. Considering our initial plans, how do you think we are doing?
12. Do you have any other comments about our initial plans for Mirvish Village? Please share them with us.
